About Us
The Victory Ground celebrated its Centenary in 2020 having provided community sports facilities throughout its existence.
The ground was initially purchased by a Director of Greene King Brewery in celebration of his male children all surviving the First World War. For many years the Brewer operated the ground for its staff and families and then opened up its use for sports local clubs. In 1975 they decided to sell the ground to St Edmundsbury Borough Council who continued to operate it as a community facility. Sadly, the quality of the ground deteriorated over time and in the 1990s discussions began led by Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club and Bury St Edmunds Hockey Club about creating a not for profit organisation to operate the ground and bring it back to its former glory as one of the best sport facilities in East Anglia.
In 1995 Victory Sports Ground (Bury St Edmunds) Limited was created and a 25 year lease agreed. Work to improve the ground was soon successful with users benefited from the quality of Groundsmanship. By the early 2000s however, the buildings were starting to show their age and funding for general improvements hard to obtain. However, an opportunity to re-develop the buildings arose and so began work to create the state of the art sports centre and community pavilion we have today. In addition, we were successful in purchasing the ground freehold, thus securing the future of sport on the Victory Ground for generations to come.
Having raised over £2m the major Stakeholders in the Community Interest Company were able to complete the re-development in 2013 facilitating a substantial increase in participation allowing several thousands members of the local community to use the Ground and its facilities all year round.
